Man with Yellow Eyelids
I drew this, in a fit of discouragement actually, after being rejected by an art publisher for the umpteenth time.
The feedback, unsolicited but usually one that comes with rejection, was that my work was one-dimensional (or something like this) and I needed to show texture, and whatever else they said....I honestly stopped listening because the tone and expression was so familiar.
Long story shorter, this image "Man with Yellow Eyelids" has turned out to be one of my best sellers. This image is a stylized, abstract portrait of an African American man with geometric and vibrant features. The face is divided into bold blocks of color—red, brown, black, and yellow—giving it a striking visual contrast.
Oh, I placed yellow in his eyes to represent the sun. I wanted him (errr, me!) to be hopeful about the future no matter any of the obstacles that might come his way.
